Introduction

My name is Crystal and I've been a fan of Magic: the Gathering since the 90s. Starting in late 2024 I got really into custom card creation and I spent the better part of 2025 designing a fully draftable custom set based on Nexon Games' mobile game Blue Archive, including a set of five associated preconstructed Commander decks and three Secret Lair drops covering cards that couldn't fit into the main set. I've made this site to share these sets, including download links and instructions on how to play with the cards yourself via Cockatrice, and I plan on creating some original sets in the future that I'll be sharing here as well.

Universes Beyond: Blue Archive

A fully draftable 277-card Magic: The Gathering set based on the real-time strategy/role-playing game/visual novel Blue Archive, developed by South Korean developer MX Studio/Nexon Games and published by Yostar and Nexon, this set is based on characters and events mostly ranging from the launch of the game through the conclusion of Volume F.

Blue Archive tells the intersecting stories of the students of the sprawling academy city of Kivotos, a city with an ancient and mysterious past divided into multiple districts each with a school at its center. The player is put into the role of Sensei, a teacher from outside the city who has arrived to lead the newly formed Independent Federal Investigation Club SCHALE, serving as a mentor to students across Kivotos and guiding them through their studies, the trials and triumphs of daily life, the schemes of criminal gangs, predatory megacorporations and dark secret societies; even the apocalyptic threat of eldritch forces from another dimension.

Special thanks to my partner Joey and friend Roz for helping playtest these cards and to the members of the Doghouse discord's #toxic-custom-cards chat for helping me revise them.

Showcase mechanics from Universes Beyond: Blue Archive include:

  • Debt: Thanks to the underhanded financial manipulation of the Kaiser Corporation and the less sophisticated banditry of street criminals, students like those remaining in Abydos High School find themselves burdened with unreasonable debt that they must overcome to achieve their dreams. As a player, your spells and creatures may give your opponent debt counters, or allow you to sacrifice future resources for current gain by taking them on yourself. At the beginning of your upkeep, you may pay 1 any number of times to remove that many debt counters. Then if you have any debt counters, return a permanent you control to your hand and lose 1 life.

  • Firefights: Students in Kivotos carry firearms as standard school supplies, and engage in reckless firefights thanks to the unique and powerful halos each student has, granting them the durability to withstand bullets. When you have a firefight with an opponent, each player in the firefight reveals a card from their hand; or reveals the top card of their library, then puts that card on the top or bottom. A player wins if their card had a higher mana value, unleashing additional power from their spells or permanents.
    Vanitas Vanitatum Mina, Hard-Boiled
  • Sensei’s Bond: As Sensei of SCHALE, players will help their students achieve greater strength forging deep, enduring bonds. When you bond with a student, you put a +1/+1 counter on a creature you control. It becomes legendary. Then if there are four or more +1/+1 counters on that creature, draw a card, representing the new skills and equipment unlocked when your relationship reaches its peak.
Make-Up Work Club Nagisa, Tea Party Host
  • Chroma: An unknowable, all-consuming eldritch threat from outside of Kivotos, the Chroma is Sensei and their students' greatest threat. Representing it on a cycle of Mythic Rare permanents is the returning mechanic from Eventide, with a twist. Chroma grants players potentially game-altering power based on the number of colored mana symbols of any color in the mana cost of permanents.

Universes Beyond: Blue Archive Commander

In addition to the fully draftable base set, Universes Beyond: Blue Archive also includes five 100-card preconstructed decks for the Commander format, each one representing two of Kivotos' schools and based around a different three color wedge combination.

  • Desert Dreams: This Black, Green and Blue deck represents Abydos High School and Arius Branch School. With Yume, Endless Hope as their commander, players can carry out her search for the treasure that can save Abydos, utilizing the powers of the spreading Deserts and a self-mill strategy to fill their graveyard and use it as a secondary hand, increasing card advantage and cheating large threats onto the battlefield. Yume, Endless Hope Gangsters' Gathering
  • Poolside Investigations: This Blue, Red and White deck represents Millennium Science School and Valkyrie Police School. With Aris, Meticulous Maid as their commander, players will supercharge their path to victory by amassing a collection of artifacts and sacrificing them to power up their creatures. Aris, Meticulous Maid Kanna, Scary Smile
  • Reunion in the Snowfield: This Green, Blue and Red deck represents Hyakkiyako Alliance Academy and Red Winter Federal Academy. With Yukari, Hyakkaryouran Elite as their commander, players will reunite the legendary forces of the fractured Hyakkaryouran Conflict Resolution Council through the power of snow and Sagas to overrun their opponents. Yukari, Hyakkaryouran Elite Tomoe, Snowbound Storyteller
  • Unbreakable Bonds: This White, Black and Green deck represents Trinity General School and SRT Special Academy. With Antique Seraphim, Trinity Idols as their commander, players will help their creatures grow into a formidable force with the power of Sensei's bond. Antique Seraphim, Trinity Idols Miyako, Resolute Leader
  • Ballet of Bullets: This Red, White and Black deck represents Gehenna Academy and Shanhaijing Senior Secondary School. With Hina, Concert Pianist as their commander, players will create and sacrifice tokens to overwhelm their opponents with value while engaging in firefights to make bigger, splashier plays. Hina, Concert Pianist The Senses Descend

Secret Lair Drop: Blue Archive

Alongside the main set and Commander Decks, there are three Secret Lair drops of five cards each associated with Blue Archive. Blue Archive: A Certain Scientific Record of Youth, Blue Archive: Flaming Sword and Blue Archive: Adults of Kivotos each feature original cards and reskins of classic Magic cards with unique full art treatments to supplement the main set.

How to Play With Cockatrice

If you're interested in playing with the cards I've shared on this site yourself, one quick and easy way is via Cockatrice, an application that lets you build and play online with your own decks and supports custom cards and custom card images. To get started, download the Cockatrice client from Github and follow the setup instructions there, then follow the next steps to download and install my custom set and image files.

Once you've installed Cockatrice, you can download the Cockatrice XML files and Custom Image Folders for each set and subset featured on this site via the Downloads page. Once you've downloaded these files, you'll need to import them into Cockatrice. Within Cockatrice, find the Card Database menu in the top toolbar and select Open custom sets folder from that menu. This will open your computer's File Explorer to the custom set folder, and you can paste the Cockatrice XML files into that folder, as shown below:

Once you've done this, return to the top toolbar and again, under Card Database, select Open custom image folder. This will open your computer's File Explorer to the custom image folder, and you can extract the files from the .zip archives into that folder. I recommend keeping them as separate folders within the custom image folder, as shown below:

After you have the XML files and custom image files in the appropriate folders, restart Cockatrice and you will be prompted to enable the new sets. Select Yes, and you should then be able to view and use all of the cards from these sets in Cockatrice's Deck Editor.
As for the .cod decklist files, you can load those in Cockatrice by selecting Load deck from the Deck Editor menu found in the top toolbar, as shown below. You can also save your own decklists from this menu:
